Why did my Facebook ads stop working? 9 common causes

Ads that worked last month and don’t now usually have one of a handful of causes. Check these in order before you change everything.

The short answer

The most common causes are: people have seen the ad too often, a change reset Meta’s learning, the audience is too small, tracking broke, the budget changed sharply, the ad or account was restricted, your website is down, competition rose, or it’s simply the off season. Check them in that order.

1. People have seen your ad too often

Check frequency in Ads Manager: how many times the average person has seen the ad. When it climbs and results fall, the ad has worn out. Fix: new images or video, a new angle or offer.

2. A change reset the learning phase

Big edits to an ad set (budget, audience, optimisation or new ads) send it back into learning while Meta works out who to show it to. Meta’s guidance has long been about 50 results in 7 days to leave learning, and some accounts have been shown a lower bar1. Fix: make fewer, bigger changes, and give them a few days.

3. Your audience is too small

A tight area, narrow interests or lots of exclusions can leave too few people to reach. Costs rise as Meta runs out of new people. Fix: widen the area or loosen targeting a step at a time.

4. Tracking broke

If your pixel or Conversions API stopped sending events, Meta loses the signal it optimises on, and your results may look worse than they are. Check Events Manager for the events you optimise for, and test your forms and checkout.

5. The budget jumped or dropped sharply

Doubling a budget overnight can push an ad set back into learning and raise costs. Fix: change budgets in steps, a fifth to a third at a time.

6. The ad or account was restricted

Rejected ads, a failed payment or an account restriction can stop delivery without much warning. Check Account Quality and your payment settings.

7. Your website or form is broken

If the page your ad sends people to is down or slow, or the form fails, clicks won’t turn into leads. Open the ad on your phone and go through it like a customer.

8. Competition went up

More advertisers chasing the same people pushes prices up. Facebook cost per lead rose about 21% in a year2. Fix: make sure each lead is worth what you pay, and cut ads that don’t bring paying work.

9. It’s the off season

Many businesses have seasons. Compare with the same weeks last year before deciding the ads are broken.

Check every morning, not every month

Most of these problems show up in the numbers within a day. Catching them early is the difference between losing a day of budget and losing a month of it.

Questions

Should I restart an ad that stopped working?

Duplicating an ad can sometimes help, but it resets learning and loses its history. Try fresh creative or a broader audience first.

How long should I wait before changing a new ad?

Give it enough budget for about 10–20 results, or a few days, before judging, unless it’s clearly wasting money.

Did Apple’s privacy changes break my ads?

They made tracking harder from 2021, which is why server-side tracking (the Conversions API) matters. Check that your events are still arriving.

See what your own ads are worth

Tony checks every live ad each morning and tells you which to turn off, which to scale and why, using your numbers. The first audit is free and takes four minutes.
